CHAPTER 15

Gabriel

I had never expected to be knocked unconscious by my curse. In all my years of bearing the burden of the curse, I had never fallen into a coma and could control myself enough to stay conscious.

But this time, it was different. Once I saw Nissa, I felt a wave of overwhelming dread wash over me. My body trembled and my eyes grew heavy, as if something was pulling me toward a dark abyss. I fought back, desperate to stay aware, but it was of no use. I could feel the curse taking control of me, and soon my vision blurred, then the world around me disappeared.

Although I wanted Nissa to marry me, I shouldn’t have asked her in such a coercive manner. When I awoke from the coma, regret overwhelmed me, and what was even more upsetting was she was gone.

When I went to her room, which was empty, I was terrified. I didn’t know what to think, and it was impossible to keep from picturing the worst-case scenario: Nissa left because she couldn’t stand the idea of being with me. Just like when I vanished, it left her with an empty room and agonizing thoughts.

However, once I found her, I realized it would have been better if she had left that night; at the very least, she would not have bled as much.

She yelled, “Never speak my name again!” I knew she was serious when she said it, but the curse still had me dazed. The discovery of the hidden path in my father’s study left me confused.

With the golden knife, which I had never seen before, still held at my neck, I told Nissa, “You’ve had a lot of blood loss. We need to do something about the wound.” I wasn’t sure if she was going to cut my throat with it or not.

“Yes, I’m bleeding a lot, but that’s what your father wants,” she said.

My mind was blank, rendered mute by the sight before me. Flames had erupted from an unknown source and began snaking their way up the walls like writhing serpents. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

The heat felt intense and unbearable. I could sense it radiating off the walls and seeping into my skin, making breathing painful. The air was still, and not a single sound pierced the silence. I looked around, searching for someone or something, but all I could see was the fire. It was beautiful and mesmerizing, and yet it filled me with fear. I knew I should turn and run, but I couldn’t make myself move. It rooted me to the spot, watching the flames dance as I tried to understand what was happening.

Once the blade fell from my neck, I whirled around to face Nissa. Behind her was a wall of intense fire, rolling and twisting like the hot breath of some demonic beast. In the eerie glow of the firelight, Nissa’s green eyes seemed to burn with an otherworldly power and her hair whipped in the heatwave created by the inferno.
